So… it appears our longest serving current player is leaving us. This time its not for Oxford. Neither is his destination the much-rumoured move to Sixfields. No – Andy Burgess is, apparently, off to Cyprus.
His supposed destination is Nea Salamis FC – Wiki describes it as ”a Cypriot football and volleyball club” (we’ll presume he’s there for the footy). Last season they gained promotion to the top flight of Cypriot football – the appeal for Burgess of playing top-flight Eureopean football (with the outside chance of Champions League or UEFA Cup football in the short-term future) is most certainly there.
It’s not all fun and frollicks, however. Salamis’ true home stadium has been adandoned since 1974, when the Turks invaded. They now play at the homely Ammochostos Stadium (below), capacity 5,000. Again, quoting Wiki, it is built ”inside the refugee suburbs of Larnaca”.
I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into, Andy. While Cypriot football is hardly the biggest of ponds, you will definitely become a small fish when you arrive.
