Simon Parsell has been at RDFC for 10 years, and as the climax to this milestone he will watch on as Rushden take on a Tottenham Hotspure XI side, a team he has supported since childhood. Key RDFC players – including Curtis Woodhouse – will sit out of today’s game. DC’s injury has left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Rushden management team, and no further risks will be taken.
In a vibrant start, Rushden found themselves 2-1 up after 12 minutes. Lee Phillips and Andy Burgess gave the home side a 2-0 lead within 5 minutes, before Spurs’ Pekhart made it 2-1.

The topsy-turvey manner of the game continued as two quick THFC goals – one a Gareth Jelleyman OG – reversed the score, seeing THFC go up 3-2. Like last season’s pre-season game (which Rushden won 3-2), this game is proving to be a high-scoring, entertaining affair.

Rushden fell further behind as Peckhart grabbed his hatrick. They missed a major chance to regain the one goal defecit when LP missed a penalty (below)

Rushden went on to lose the game 4-2. However, the loss is not all bad news: Without wanting to look like I’m clutching at straws, beating this side last year did not help us much! We’ve had a good pre-season campaign overall, but these last 3 games have stopped us from getting too confident, and have brought the egos down, whilst raising the bar for Saturday.
Rushden now have four days to prepare for the season’s opener on Saturday. The Diamonds are 6/5 favourites on winning the game (link), but the nerves will no doubt be jangling both on and off the pitch (were a large travelling congregate is expected).
Check back tomorrow for Andy Burgess’ view on the pre-season campaign, and the squad (exclusively for RDFC Blog).
