On Saturday Rushden and Peterborough Utd will face in the annual Maunsel Cup final, both clubs’ first competitive game of the season. Rushden’s last competitive game was also in a county cup final – Rushden beat Brackley Town to lift the NFA Hillier Cup. They will face a considerably tougher opponent with League 1 Posh travelling to NP.
Both sides’ hsve enjoyed the pre-season campaign so far. Rushden have scored 11 goals in three games, taking 7 pts. from a possible 9. Posh put four goals past a Liverpool XI side, and then earned an easy win over Rushden’s fellow-promotion rivals Stevenage Borough.
Posh are one of the only sides to hold a 100% league record over the Diamonds, winning four out of four. Nonetheless, Rushden have a good record in the Maunsel Cup, having won it 3 times in total, the most recent coming in 2006. Rushden’s first game against Peterborough included Woody, Jellyman and Sagi Burton.

It is unknown as to how many fans will turn up to watch the game. Rushden’s 10 new signings should do well to tempt a few fans who otherwise wouldn’t have thought to come, and the local aspect of the tie should entice a further few. However, it is unlikely that the attendance will rise above the 500 mark.
Match photos will be available either during, or after the match.
