Shaw shanked…

Is “shanked” even a word?! Nonetheless, it gives me a good enough cultural reference with which to begin my article on the bitter-sweet news that Tom Shaw had been released, and replaced by Jamie McGuinness.

Despite the fact that the 21-year old still has 12 months left on his contract, GH has allowed the midfielder to seek a new club. To both player and manager, it seems clear that the decision is for the best.

“I think we have moved on with the
squad so Tom has been told he can have a free transfer” said GH. “He wants to play regularly and we can’t guarantee him that here. If he finds another club, we will let him go. When you look at the midfield now we’ve got plenty of competition with Andy Burgess, Rob Wolleaston, Curtis Woodhouse, Jon Challinor, Scott Mitchell and Michael Corcoran.”

The move received a bitter-sweet reaction fromt he RDFC faithful:

What Shaw didnt have in technique etc, he made up for with his heart and commitment, always gave 110%. Although our new signings will probably be better players, i doubt any of them will show as much passion as he did.

I don’t think you can just buy heart and commitment has we seem to be trying to do. I think this may come back to bite us.

Even if he wouldnt have got much of a look in this year, he definately would have next season with woodhouse leaving. Yes we have Mitchell and Wolleaston but they haven’t proved the comitment yet like Tom most certainly did. Bad, bad decision in my eyes…

He has never been the most technically gifted player, and at the age of 21 he needs to be a regular feature in the first team squad; if our new signings are as good as their reputations suggest then unfortunately for Tom he would be well down the pecking order. I wish him all the best for the future, and would love to see him playing at Nene Park again for someone else, I’m sure he would get a terrific reception.

It’s a pity about Tom moving on, but he would have struggled to get in the side and was never consistant enough for me.

The announcement of the signing of McGuinness was more consistently positive. McGuinness has been added to the club in the same roles as Sam Smith and Jake Beecroft… a back-up, handy-to-have-in-the-squad player. He is the club’s 8th summer signing.

Also linked with a move to NP is Sagi Burton. He has been on trial at the club and, according to a source of a source, has been “our best player in pre-season training”.

Shame about Tom Shaw. I don’t think he was given a real chance. He was inand out of the team and never had an extended run. Also Hill quotes as having Corcoran and Mitchell as midfielders but I thought Corcoran was a centre half and Mitchell a right back. Another season of constant chopping and changing with players out of position looms As for Sagi Burton NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    Scott Mitchell is a midfielder!

Didn’t know where to put this one, so I’ll put it here – Gareth Seddon used to be a male “escort”, going by the name of Gary Raven.

Don’t believe me Joey? Bury fans will confirm…
