Exeter reaction

Rushden felt the brunt of their fixture pile-up as, after winning 3 games in 6 games, they fell at the hands of promotion chasing Exeter last night. Despite showing the effects of exhaustion, Rushden did not disgrace themselves against a team desperate for points. The big wheel keeps on turning next week, as Rushden finish off the season with games against Oxford (22nd), Grays (24th), Aldershot (26th) and Brackely (Hillier Cup, on the 29th).

The day took a sour turn as, soon after the Grecians’ second strike, Michael Rankine suffered a blow to the head and had to be stretchered off, and taken to a nearby hospital. With another player illness in the youth team resulting in a trip to hospital also, we wish both Michael, and the unnamed YT player all the best.

Michael apparently suffered a concussion, and subsequently will miss the remainder of the season. Should this be the case, Rank’s league tally for the season will end on 12 goals, four shy of Simeon Jackson’s total, yet four more than he scored last season.

The game was memorable, if only for the fact that Andy Burgess made his 287th appearence for the club. The feat means that, behind Garry Butterworth (371) and Paul Underwood (301), Burgess is now the 3rd most capped Rushden player. Nearly 11 years after signing for the Diamonds, Burge has become a true Rushden legend, and fans’ favourite.

His appearence yesterday meant that Andy passed Darren Collins’ total of 286 caps. Darren is the clubs top goalscorer, with 153 goals for the club.

Just 1300 Kettering fans turned up at the A-Line Arena yesterday to see their Championship winning side receive the trophy. It will be interesting to see how attendances are affected next season, in a campaign in which will undoubtedly be less attractive to watch, with goals and wins harder to come by. With last season’s BSN champions Droylsden failing to impress this term, I think we’re all hoping to see a similar occurence next term.

“I’m not going to knock any of the lads, as 4 games in 7 days is always going to be tough, and we have done brilliantly to get 9 out of a possible12 points. “

“When Ranks went off I thought we really missed him”

“We can take absolutely nothing from that, again a very poor performance. Ironic too that the Season Ticket forms were out today, hardly going to inspire me to part with my cash after watching todays dire performance. “

“El Kholti is getting better with very game!”

“Today for me was the outcome of 4 games in a week – not a great perfomance, but we were served up a treat on Thursday (more so the second half).”

“Yes, today was poor, but most of the lads looked completely knackered!”
