The league’s worst club visits Nene Park tomorrow, but Rushden should underestimate the Bloods at their own peril. Droylsden have enjoyed something of a revival of late, first beating Halifax 2-0, and then holding the league leaders, and Rushden’s SS final opponents, Aldershot to a 2-2 draw. While survival is surely now a naive dream- 16 points is surely to big a gap to bridge when the club have earned just 17 all season… – Droylsden will not simply roll over and die.
With just 880 fans turning up to watch Rushden’s 1-0 conquest of Halifax last night, a large crowd is not expected for tomorrow’s tie. Droylsden are not known for their legions of travelling fans, nor, in fact, are they known for their home attendances which average just under 700 fans. It is expected, according to the ever-helpful True Blood, that about 20 fans will make the trip.
The two clubs last met in December, a 4-1 away win. Goals from Simeon Jackson, Michael Rankine (x2), and Wayne Hatswell gave Rushden the win in a waterlogged Butcher’s Arms Ground. The game was a memorable one for all who watched: three penalties, one given when a Droylsden defender picked up the ball thinking he had been fouled, atrocious playing conditions, and Simeon Jackson’s goal that never was; his shot going through the net, only to result in a Droylsden goal kick. With Simeon now at Gillingham he will not have a chance to make up for that effort.
Rushden have been unbeaten at home since the two clubs’ last meeting. With Droylsden failing to record an away win this season, and earning just 2 points from a possible 51 on the road, Rushden will be confident of extending their unbeaten home run to 9 games, and are 4/9 favourites to do so (Blue Square Bet) It will be interesting to see whether Droylsden’s good form continues away from the Butcher’s Arms Ground.
