11th placed York City (at the time of writing) travel to Nene Park on Saturday to take on Rushden for the third time this season. The two ties already played out between the sides this term have finished with a win going either way. The Diamonds won 3-2 in late-August, a win that marked the end of a three game losing streak for the club. City won the most recent meeting, a 1-0 win that put Rushden out of the FA Trophy.
After a worrying period at the season’s beginning (when they had to wait until mid-September to record their second win of the season) York have now moved into a comfortable mid-table position. Recent wins over Exeter and Torquay have been impressive (despite them going out of the FA Trophy on aggregate to the latter) and they will come to NP full of confidence. A play-off position is still viable; despite being 15 points behind 5th placed Burton Albion, City have two games in hand. Manager Colin Walker told BBC Radio York: “The season’s not over. We’ve plenty of football left and let’s go for it.” Having lose just three games in twenty-four since Walker took over in November, York have all the momentum they need to mount a late play-off charge.
It will be interesting to see how Rushden get over Saturday’s late, late goal at Bridge Road, especially after enjoying such a run. Nonetheless, Rushdens impressive home form of late (unbeaten since early-December) will give them every much confidence in spoiling York’s night, and making up for their earlier FA Trophy dissapointment.
Whilst Rushden enjoyed a break from league football during the week, YCFC travelled to the New Lawn to take on Forest Green Rovers. At the time of writing (20:09, with 25 minutes of the game gone) York look set to continue their run of form, and are leading 1-0.
Saturday will be Rushden’s 11th last league fixture of the season. With just 6 points seperating 16th place and 11th place, the win will be influential in determining where Rushden finish this years campaign.
Match pics will be uploaded either throughout, or immediately after the game. Reports and reaxtion will follow.
